Biographical fast facts

Full or original name at birth: Karol Jozef Wojtyla

Date, time and place of birth: May 18, 1920, at 5:30 p.m., at 7 Koscielna (Church) Street, Wadowice, Poland *

Date, time, place and cause of death: April 2, 2005, at 9:37 p.m., Vatican Apostolic Palace, Vatican City, Rome, Italy (Heart failure / Septic shock)

Error correction or clarification

* An early biography gave the incorrect date of birth of May 17th for Pope John Paul II. The Man Who Leads the Church: An Assessment of Pope John Paul II by Peter Hebblethwaite (1980), erroneously reports "His good brain was fostered by hard schooling -- at Wadowice in southern Poland, where he was born 17 May 1920 and brought up." Thankfully, very few sources have ever repeated that error.
