Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia - Errors

The following is a sampling of errors contained in the 1994 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia. Additional information on each error correction can be found by clicking on the link at the beginning and/or end of many of the entries below.

Eddie Albert (actor) - The 1994 edition mistakenly reports he was born in "1908."
Correction: Because he was born out of wedlock, his mother altered his birth certificate to read "1908." His son, Edward Albert (also an actor), confirmed this, and the fact that Eddie Albert was actually born in 1906 in Rock Island, Illinois. Consult Eddie Albert's profile for more information.

Rex Allen (actor/singer) - The 1994 edition misspells his place of birth "Wilcox, Ariz."
Correction: Strange but true, it's actually spelled Willcox, Arizona.

Jack Benny (comedian) - The 1994 edition erroneously reports he was born in "Waukegan, Ill."
Correction: He was born February 14th, 1894, at 4:04 a.m., at Mercy Hospital, in Chicago, Illinois. Visit our profile of Jack Benny for additional information.

Theodore Bikel (actor/singer) - The 1994 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia erroneously reports Bikel was born "May 24, 1924."
Correction: Bikel confirms his May 2nd, 1924 birth several times in Theo: The Autobiography of Theodore Bikel. For additional in-depth biographical data, visit our biography of Theodore Bikel.

W.C. Fields (comedian) - The 1994 edition reports the wrong month, date and year of birth, "February 10th, 1879" for W.C. Fields.
Correction: W.C. Fields was born January 29th, 1880, at Arlington House on the corner of Main and Mill Streets, Darby, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Fields lied about his date of birth (giving "April 9, 1879" as his d.o.b.) in order to get married while still underage. For many years, most reference books reported this erroneous date. January 29th, 1880, has been verified as his true date of birth by members of his family on several occasions and confirmed by various government records. Consult W.C. Fields' profile for more information.

Judy Garland (actress/singer) - The 1994 edition erroneously states she was born in "Grand Rapids, Mich."
Correction: She was born June 10th, 1922, at Itasca Hospital, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Richard Harris (actor/singer) - It mistakenly claims he was born in "1932."
Correction: He was born October 1st, 1930, at 11:20 a.m. GDT (10:20 GMT), in Limerick, Ireland. This is the date and time of birth Richard himself reported as his precise time of birth, and has subsequently been verified by many researchers. For additional biographical data, visit our profile of Richard Harris.

Audrey Hepburn (actress) - Erroneously reports "Edna Hepburn-Ruston" as her name at birth.
Correction: Members of her family have addressed, at length, the erroneous birth name attributed to her and have confirmed that Audrey Kathleen Ruston is the name on her birth certificate. Consult Audrey Hepburn's profile for more information.

Carole Landis (actress) - Erroneously reports "Aug. 3, 1948" as her date of death.
Correction: Carole Landis actually died July 5th, 1948, between 4 and 6 a.m., at 1465 Capri Drive, Pacific Palisades, California. Her death was a suicide by overdose. Visit our profile of Carole Landis for additional information.

Myrna Loy (actress) - The 1994 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia misspelled her place of birth "Raidersburg" and also erroneously reports she died "Dec. 15, 1993."
Correction: Her place of birth is spelled Radersburg, Montana, and she died December 14th, 1993, at 6:22 p.m., at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City, New York. For additional in-depth biographical data, visit our biography of Myrna Loy.

Walter Matthau (actor) - It erroneously reports "Walter Matuschanskavasky" as his real name.
Correction: His family has repeatedly verified that Walter John Matthow was his actual name at birth. For additional information, visit our profile of Walter Matthau.

Steve McQueen (actor) - Erroneously reports "Slater, Mo." as his place of birth.
Correction: He was born in Beech Grove, Indiana, and later raised in Slater, Missouri.

Ethel Merman (actress/singer) - Erroneously reports "1909" as her year of birth.
Correction: She was actually born January 16th, 1908, at 359 4th Avenue, in Astoria, Queens, New York. For additional in-depth biographical data, visit our biography of Ethel Merman.

Andy Warhol (artist) - The 1994 edition erroneously reports not only the wrong date of birth (Aug. 8), but also the incorrect year of birth (1927), as well as the wrong city and state of birth (Cleveland, Ohio) for Andy Warhol.
Correction: Warhol was actually born August 6th, 1928, at 6:30 a.m., at 73 Orr Street, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

It is not our intent to denigrate this fine publication, but merely to point out the above inaccuracies to prevent further dissemination of the erroneous data.
